SYRACUSE — Syracuse Police, Turkey Creek Fire Territory and EMS along with the American Legion Auxiliary Post 223, Sons of the American Legion Post 223 and the American Legion Post 223 joined in a ceremony commemorating the 14th anniversary of Sept. 11.

Members of the various groups stood at attention in single file as the public filled the small memorial park, Crosson Mill Park, across from the Syracuse Town Hall. The group started with a brief prayer at 6 p.m. followed by a speech by Turkey Creek Fire Territory Chief Mickey Scott.

Scott walked the public through a timeline of the Sept. 11 events, noting the large loss of lives between those on the planes, within the buildings and those who worked to heroically rescue those trapped inside.

Scott told the public that they must “never forget the lives lost,” as he spoke of the thousands killed in the terrorist attack. Scott also took time to recognize those who were saved that day. “What we may never know is how many lives were saved by others,” said Scott.

He finished his speech by saying, “We must stand strong as a nation,” and continue to protect and serve the community and the citizens of this nation.

The American Legion Post No. 223 honor guard ended the ceremony with a 21 gun salute followed by the playing of taps by Lorree Corbat of the American Legion Post Auxillary.

Earlier in the day, public service members were invited to join in a free appreciation luncheon hosted by Oakwood Resort. Emergency personnel could choose between two times to join — 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 3 to 5 p.m. on Oakwood’s Back Porch.

Mickey Scott, son Greg Scott, Greg’s wife Leigh and their son, Evan, age 2, all joined in the afternoon lunch and several others stopped by throughout the day.

The American Legion Post 223 along with Syracuse Police, EMS and Turkey Creek Fire Territory each attended the Wawasee High School football game following the ceremony.
